Jacob Lint and Gabriel Miller built the first store about 1852. The building was burned in 1975, and in 1876 Frederick Durr erected his hotel upon the same lot. Mr. Durr emigrated from Germany and had kept a store in Pocahontas from 1871 to 1876. Formerly, he had engaged in carpentry. He has served as township audior, school director, and is at present constable.

The Pocahontas postoffice was established in 1851 with Benjamin J. Yoder as the first postmaster. Others were A. J. Stoner, Solomon Houtzel and Sallie Houtzel. The postoffice was eventually discontinued.
