The qualifications of Hellertown’s postmastership, those chiefly of
a growing industrial and mercantile community of a very progressive
people, are met in a capable manner by Mr. Scholl, whose former
educational and industrial experiences have been of aid to him in
broadening his career and opening the way to his present position of
trust. Local and Saucon Valley interests have welcomed his counsel and
direction, and he is accounted a citizen who generously shares in all
movements that have for their purpose the higher welfare of the
community. He is a son of Edmund B. Scholl, who was born in Fleetwood,
and of Mary (Herbert) Scholl, who was born in Richmond Township, and
who survives her husband.
William H. Scholl was born October 30, 1876, in Berks County, where
he attended the public school. He then matriculated at Keystone State
Normal School, where he graduated with the class of 1898, and then
taught school nine years in both Berks and Northampton counties. He
then gave his attention to a business career, and for fourteen years he
was employed in the Bethlehem Steel Works. He was acting postmaster of
Hellertown from January 1, to June 5, 1922, and from January 1, 1923,
to January 1, 1924, and he received his regular appointment to the
postmastership, June 5, 1921. He is a member of the board of directors
of the Saucon Valley Building and Loan Association; and is a member of
the board of governors of the Playgrounds Association. His fraternal
affiliations are those of the Improved Order of Red Men, and he has
been secretary of Killaten Tribe (of Hellertown), twenty-one years; and
of Kutztown Lodge, No. 1004, Junior Order United American Mechanics;
and he is a member of the Saucon Valley Sportsmen’s Association. His
religious fellowship is with the Lutheran Church, and he has been
treasurer of its Sunday School twenty-three years.
Mr. Scholl married, August 23, 1898, Elizabeth A. Angstadt, of
Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and they are the parents of: Roda V., Homer B.,
George R., Gladys, Mary, Titus, Jeanette, John, and William Lee, all
living at home; and Olive, who married William R. Nauman, Jr.; they are
the parents of Jane, Betty, William, Rife, and two younger ones.
