Biography
Robert and Catherine Risher Cochran came into Pennsylvania from
Baltimore, Maryland. Two of Catherine’s brothers also moved from Baltimore
with Catherine.They went to Hannastown first and later had a mill, later called
Crawford’s Mill, just a short distance from Shearer’s cross roads. Here
Robert Cochran died, leaving a large family.Catherine is mentioned in the assessments of 1830 as owning Lot No. 34,
house and cow. She lived on the Jackson farm, two and a half miles from what
is now known as Apollo. ,p> His widow soon moved to the new town, Warren
(Apollo), just located at the intersection of the State Road and the
Kiskiminetas River. Catherine Cochran purchased a lot on Indiana (now South
Fourth) Street and built a house, which was occupied by them or her daughter
for many years. Her son, John, then about 12 years old helped clear the land
for Warren.Catherine Risher Cochran was the grandmother of Elizabeth Cochrane
Seaman, “Nellie Bly.”
