Charles Doll

Charles Doll (1832 – 1899) of Jackson Township and Stroudsburg (Northampton/Monroe counties) PA

Note: all data contained in this mini-biography has been cross referenced to obituaries, census records, death certificates, military records, church records, and some personal knowledge.  It is as solid as I can put together at this time.  Much thanks to all of the cousins that have been so willing to share data thus far, and in advanced to those who will in the future.

The start of this family tree, at this time, is rooted with Jacob Doll and Catherine Ruchstein/Rustine, who lived in a couple of different places in Northampton County and Monroe County (after the split off).  Jacob was born about 1784 and died around 1858.  It is rumored that he was buried somewhere on his farm.  Catherine was thought to have been born in 1787 and died between about April 1870. Her parents were Frederick and Mary Magdalene Ruchstein.  Frederick was a shoemaker, as was Jacob Doll, so I wouldn't doubt that Jacob worked with/for Frederick at some point.  Also, it is believed that the Hannah Doll that was married to Jacob Ruchstein, was Jacob's sister...and Jacob Ruchstein was in fact Catherine's brother…a little confusing, but this trend continues in later generations as well.

Jacob and Catherine had the following children:

1) Louisa Doll (b 1805) was married to George Smith;
2) Catherine Doll (b 1806) was married to James Evans;
3) Mary Doll (b 1808) was married to Lewis Bond;
4) Sarah Ann Doll (b 1810) was married to Joseph Slutter;
5) Elisabeth Doll (b 1811) was married to William Bower;
6) Hanna Doll (b 1813) was married to Charles Slutter;
7) John Doll (b 1815) was married to Susan Felker;
8) Jacob Doll (b 1817) was married to Mary Elizabeth Hay;
9) Frederick Doll (b 1819) was married to Mary Ann Miller;
10) Samuel Doll (b 1821) was married to Sophia Boyer;
11) George Doll (b 1824) was married to Susanna Singer;
12) Joseph Doll (b 1829) was married to first Mary Smoke and then to Hannah Seip;
13) Charles Doll (b 1832 - d 1899) was married to an unknown first wife and then to Hannah Marie Transue;

Since I am descended from Charles, I will fill in the pieces from there…I am working on collecting more documents and also filling in family groups on Charles’ siblings…as well as the Transue, Hunt, Stephens, Titus, and Ruchstein/Rustine/Rustay branches.

First wife is thought to have been a Slutter, with whom he had the following three children:

Ellen “Ella” M Doll - b 1852 was married to a John Bennett and then an Edward Price.  Ellen and John had the following three children: Elsie (b 1877); Josephine (b 1879); and Charles Franklin (b 1881).  Ellen was living in Warnertown, PA with John until his demise.  Was listed as a Mrs. Price in 1913 and 1918 obits…living in Canadensis and then East Stroudsburg respectively.

Jacob S. Doll - b 1853 - was living in Jersey City, NJ in 1913 and then Easton, PA in 1918.  He was married to an Agnes unknown (b Jan 1864) in 1882 and divorced between 1910 and 1920 census records.  They had seven children: Maude (b July 1882); Clyde (b Dec 1885 – daughter); Roy (b 4/11/1887); Ralph Leslie (b 7/4/1890); Blanche (b July 1892); Roland (b 12/6/1894) and Max (b Dec 1897).   Roland and Ralph married Nellie Grace Smith and Rebecca Smith (respectively), sisters, who were daughters of Morgan and Rebecca W. Smith.  They lived in Easton, PA.

George Doll - b 1859 - was living in Weatherly, PA both 1913 and 1918.  He worked for the railroad in various positions.  He was married twice (widowed once). No information available on his first wife, other than a daughter, Beulah Doll (b Oct 1885).  His second wife’s name was Ella, and they married in 1892.  They had two children: Esther Doll (b April 1893) and Lee Edward Doll (b 1/8/1896) both in East Mauch Chunk, PA.  Esther worked in a candy factory, and Lee was a core maker.  Esther was married to a Charles Schaffer.

Charles married Hannah Marie Transue (d/o Isaac Transue and Elizabeth Titus). Hannah was born in 4/12/1838 and died on 12/3/1913. Her father Isaac Transue was the son of Elias Transue (Revolutionary War veteran per DAR, b 1756 – d 1830) and Catherine Miller.  While there is a tree available that brings the Transue line back to the 1600s, I am working on solidifying some of the details.  Elizabeth Titus has been another road block for me.  The current thought is she is the daughter of John Titus and Catherine Bachman, but this has not been substantiated.  Charles and Hannah had the following children, all born in Stroudsburg, PA:

Harry A. Doll : (born 8/9/1863 Stroudsburg, PA and died 1/16/1935 in Chicago,IL) was married to Georgeanna "Anna" Hunt (daughter of John Hunt and Elizabeth Stephens, born 2/10/1865 in Delaware Water Gap, PA and died 7/10/1934 in Chicago, IL).  They were married on 8/22/1886 in New Jersey, per a wedding license.  Harry worked for the railroads in various positions (was a yard foreman in Chicago) and then as a night watchmen for Pinkerton Services in Chicago.   They had the following seven children: Lawrence Edward (b 3/13/1887 in PA – d 2/7/1963 in MI); John Russell (b April 1889 PA – d 9/24/1901 in Chicago) Vernon Doll (b 1892 in NJ – died between 1935 and 1963);  Harry Jr (b 1/24/1894 in Hoboken, NJ – died between 1935 and 1963);  Leslie Frank (b 1/14/1896 in Chicago – d 1/27/1982 in Chicago…my grandfather); Ruth (b 5/7/1905 Chicago – d 4/24/1989 in Louisville, KY) married to a Benjamin Zellen;  and one living Doll still remains.

Anna/Annie Doll: b 1866 – was married and widowed twice.  I have no information on her husbands.  She had two daughters: Ruth (b 1892) and Ethel (b 1896).

Ulysses Grant Doll: b 1868 - d prior to 1913, was married to an Anna Frutchey (July 1869 – 11/11/1949, daughter of Aaron and Etna Frutchey).  They had two children Carroll V Doll (June 1891 – 2/17/1957) and Marguerite Doll (Feburary 1893).  They lived in Fairmont, WV during the 1900 census, with Ulysses working as a glass blower.  Anna and children were back in Stroudsburg, PA for the 1910 Census.

Edward Doll: b 1870 - d 1918. Was married to a Julia.  They also lived in Fairmont, WV during the 1900 Census.  He was a glass blower.  They had one known child: Leslie Horace Doll (b 6/14/1897).  Julia died between 1905 and 1910.

Catherine "Katie" Doll: b 1873 - d 1949. She was married to Charles Ernest Garris (1868 – 1944).  They had four children: William (b1892); Flora (b 1893); Charles (b 4/18/1895) and George (b 1908).  Charles and Catherine lived in Stroudsburg and are buried in the Union Cemetery in Stroudsburg.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Doll: b 1874.  She was also widowed, and no information has been obtained on her husband, other than he was born in Indiana.  She had twin girls, Willita and Francis born about 1910.

William "Will" Doll: b 1876 – d after 1930.  He was a glass blower and lived in Fairmont, WV in 1900, along with his brothers Ulysses and Edward, and also was a glass blower.  He was married to Anne Marie Spence (daughter of Joseph and Mary Spence) in 1903.  They lived in Newark, Licking County, PA.  Anne Marie was born on 3/2/1885 in Ohio and died on 2/3/1935 in Newark, OH.  They had three children: Florence Doll (b 1904); Mary Doll (b 1910) and Francis Doll (b 1912).
