BERTUCCA posted by Dale Malden on Friday, March 30, 2001

I am trying to research my mother's branch of my family tree. It has proven to be extremely difficult. My grandmother was suppose to be born in Galeton, PA around 1907. Her name was Mary Lucy BERTUCCA. Her father left the family before she was 10 years old and her mother and grandparents all moved to Buffalo sometime before 1920. I found her mother as a 13 year old child in Galeton in 1900 with her parents, sister and brother. I found her parents and brother in 1910 in Galeton. I have searched everywhere and can't find her until 1920 in Buffalo with her mother, brother and step-family. When she was alive, she tried to locate her birth certificate for the social security administration and for personal reasons. She wanted to find her father. According to my Aunt and Mother, she searched for many years for not only her birth certificate but also her father. At one point, she was told that the records in Galeton burned in a fire. She used school records from when she was a teenager in Buffalo to prove her age and eventually gave up on trying to find her father (or at least prove that he existed). Her name was Mary Lucy BERTUCCA. Her mother was Josephine Salerno and was suppose to be married to Moses Bertucca. She had one brother, Anthony Bertucca. Her mother moved to Buffalo, NY and eventually married Joseph Colosimo. She had several more children. My question is, Is it true that the birth records from Galeton, PA around 1900-1910 burned in a fire? If so, are there any other records from that decade that were used to verify birth? Another question I have is If there was a divorce, would that be included in the same fire? Is there any other place where records of divorce were kept around 1900-1910? I'm really hitting the proverbial brick wall and would appreciate any help you can give! Thanks Dale Malden
