Lancaster County Surname Queries

Good grief..... Am I the only person in the entire researching the BOWERS 'tree'?..... Surely, there is SOMEONE who is related to Jacob BOWERS b 13 Oct 1812 in Lancaster County..... Jacob removed to Fayette County when he was young, but I don't know if he went there by himself or did his parents take him there... AND just who might his parents have been?..... Surely there is someplace in Lancaster that I can contact that will tell me who was with ol' Jake when he was born.... I'm SURE his mother was in Lancaster when he was born, BUT WHO WAS SHE? Thanks for 'listening' Jack

Henry Zevely (Zebly, Zeble)was born in Switzerland in 1736 and died in North Carolina in 1795. But according to a letter by his son, Van N. Zevely, in 1856, Henry "lived in Pennsylvania and had relatives in Lancaster County." Van also mentions having a copy of a Lancaster County will in which Henry is mentioned. Van writes that he once took the will to Lancaster and "found it was a true copy." Van writes that Henry's surname is spelled "Zeble or Zebly" in the will. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Looking for anyone that can give me information on a family with the last name SHIMP who supposedly emmigrated from PA;s Lancaster County to OH, namely Monroe County, Noble County and Washington County in about 1840-1850. My husband's great great grandfather was a BENJAMIN SHIMP born 1841 in PA and died in Washington County, OH in 1916. He married Hannah Elizabeth FELTER on 1/17/1869. He was 13-15 years older than Hannah and according to the 1910 Washington County, OH census, he had been married twice, but there is no record in OH of his first marriage, so I assume he was married/divorced in PA before he came to OH. There were many other Shimps in this area of about the same age including: William SHIMP and his wife Rebecca, John SHIMP and his mother Rachel and several younger brothers and sisters, Jonas SHIMP and his wife Elizabeth, Michael SHIMP, etc. All were supposed to be born in PA, none of them claim Benjamin as a member of their families. So, does anyone out there have the slightest idea what the background of BENJAMIN SHIMP might have been..... who were his parents, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.....Carol Dennis

KEENER, ULRICK: I've got a conumdrum. All the standard information that I've seen indicates that Peter Keener and Catherine Ulrich (Ulrick) were the parents of Adam, William, Hans, and Ulrich Keener or at least some of them. Peter was born in Germany about 1685 or 1687 and died in Lancaster Co., PA in 1757, making him approximately 70 years of age. Ulrich, his son, was born in 1709 and Adam in 1710. (Your dates may vary a bit, but in this case it's the decade that concerns me.) Now, the problem. One bit of information that I just got says that Catherine arrived in Philadelphia in 1732 on the Loyal Judith with some other Ulrichs. This came from a local history (Macon County, NC) and may be suspect. However, I also just received copies of the probate papers for Peter Keener of Bethel Twp., Lancaster Co dated 1 March 1757. He died intestate and the Administration of his estate was given to "Catharine Keener Widow & Relict of Peter Keener." So far, no problem. But a year later the report made by "Henry Hartley and Catherine his wife late Catharine Keener," mentions that Adam Woolrick and Anastatius Uhler were appointed guardians of Peter, Barbara, Catherin, Mary, and Elizabeth Keener, orphan and minor children of Peter Keener, deceased during their minority. This means that none of them could have been born prior to 1737 (since the report was evidently filed in 1758). What's the answer? While it's possible, it's unlikely that the older boys (Ulrich, Adam, Hans, William) had the same mother as the orphans, especially is Catherine's name was still Ulrich in 1732 when she apparently arrive in America from Rotterdam. But, how then to explain the matrinomic "Ulrich?" Obviously, the legal papers are certainly the most accurate. Do we have two Peter Keeners completely mixed up? It would seem that we do, except for the coincidence that both died in 1757. So, does anybody out there know the answer? Thanks. Bob Keener

BURNS, HART, NEES. Ann Eliza HART married Matthew BURNS about 1830 (place?). Their first three children were born somewhere in PA 1831 to 1835. Ann Eliza's 1882 death record from Orleans Co. NY lists her parents as Polly NEEIS (NEES?, NIESE?, NEHS, etc.) and S. or L. HART. Manheim, NY is given as the birth place for all three. Searches of the census records from 1790 to 1830 for the counties around Manheim, NY turned up no NEEIS families (or rhyming names, e.g. NEES) whatsoever and no appropriate HART families. All this suggests that Manheim, PA is what was intended in the death record. Does anyone have a record of any of the above individuals or likely families which they might belong to? My ancestor Ulrich Hauri (Howrey) died in Canestoga, Chester (now Lancaster ) Co. Pa. The family immigrated from Switzerland in the early 1700's. Jacob, his son was also born there, but moved to York Co by the time he died in 1760. His son Michael Howery was born 1819 York Co. Penn andhe married Christina Hartman. Michael's daughter in law was Catherine Hess whos father was Henry. The Hess family show's up in the 1840 Census in Montgomery Co. Virginia. Perhaps the Hess family also came from Pennsylvania. Catherine Hess had a sister Elizabeth, and perhaps a brother Henry and John. Any information on the Hess or Howery family would be appreciated. Bonnie Robillard.

GRUB - GRUBB - KROPF - KROPH (and other variants!) I have two lost 'uncles' Frank Grub and John Grub and one 'aunt'Catherine who came to US @1738 with father, mother and other siblings. Landed in Phila. and later most moved to VA. These three names, however, do not follow the rest into VA (@1760) All would have been born in Germany or Switz prior to 1732, and are likely NOT Amish or Mennonite. Rest of family was in Reformed Church in VA. The parents of these two are Christian Grub (b. 1705 in Germany) and Rosina KIPP Grub. (possibly Catherine Rosina) This is a shot in the dark but I have few options!!
