Otterbein Cemetery

The Otterbein Church was built in 1889 on 1 acre of ground donated by Jemima Mott who is buried in the cemetery. The church was started as a United Brethren Church. The founder of this denomination was Philip William Otterbein. The old OTTERBEIN CHURCH that he pastored for many years in downtown Baltimore, MD is the oldest church in America with continuous services since the 1700's. Rev. Otterbein is buried in the front yard of the church. So the group that built the church by Otterbein Cemetery named their church after the founder. That is how it got its name. The cemetery was laid out in 1895. It has been known as the OTTERBEIN CEMETERY all these years. The present congregation maintains the cemetery. The church holds a regular schedule of services. I pastored the Otterbein Church from 1975-1984 and then again 1990-1996. In 2011 when we retired and moved back to the area the Church Board asked me to be the Cemetery Director.
