Biography

The Terpe Family of Clearfield County

In 1839, Karl Wilhelm and Maria Terpe migrated to America from Leipzig, Germany, with two of their three children. Julius Terpe was 14 and his sister Louisa was only 2.

They arrived in New York City after a six week voyage by sail boat. Packing all of their belongings on their backs, they walked from New York City to Clearfield County, PA., and finally settled on the Susquehanna River near Bellville. Karl Wilhelm followed farming until his death in 1867. Julius first worked in a sawmill. He was apparently a good businessman and besides owning two farms on the outskirts of DuBois, also operated a machine shop and owned a small hotel and store property, which he rented to others.
