      South Bend Natural Gas Compressor Station and Storage Pool ~ 2001 Picture

          Built in 1951 by Fish Engineering Corp., Houstin, Texas
          For New York State Natural Gas Co.

          Plant consists fo 6 Clark Industrial Engines, 8 cycle, 2000 HP per Engine with four compressors per engine - 12" diameter compressor pistons. Maximum operating pressure - 100psi.

          Three 600 HP Ingersol-Rand Auxiliary Engines to generate electricity. Two Ingersol-Rand Air Compressors - 250 psi. All engines in the plant start on compressed air and run on natural gas. The station is totally self-contained with a machine shop and spare parts warehouse.

          The storage pool consists of many depleted gas wells, cleaned out, re-tubed, cemented and recharged with natural gas from the Southwest part of USA to 75 % of original pressure.. Gas stored in the summer can be withdrawn in the winter season and can be pumped north, south, east or west. The maximun pool capacity is 17 billion cubic feet.
