I. as Quarter Master Sergeant. Mustered out with the regiment July 27, 1861.  Enrolled in 53d Regiment P. V. I. August 21, 1861 at Petersburg, Va.; mustered in September 18, 1861 as 1st Lieut.  Promoted to Captain, Company A, June 2, 1862; to Major, June 2, 1862; to Lieut. Colonel, September 29, 1864; and to Colonel, 53d P. V. I., October 30, 1864; Brevetted Brigadier-General, March 13, 1865. Mustered out with the regiment, June 30, 1865. Also served as Captain, Provost Martial, Staff of Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock.
