Laundry Soap

Transcribed by Connie Williams

Laundry Soap

5lbs. grease, 1 can lye, 1/4 lb. borax, 3 pints cold water, 1/2 cup ammonia.  Mix lye, borax, ammonia and cold water until dissolved.  Melt grease, strain through fine cheese-cloth.  When grease is cooled (luke warm), pour lye water into it and mix well, beating thoroughly for about 1/2 hour or more.  Line a pan first with paper and then an old cloth or muslin, pour the mixture into it and let stand until hard, but not too hard or it will crumble in cutting.  Turn out of pan, pull off the muslin and cut in squares.
