BARR, DENT, JOHNSTON, JORDAN, OVERTURF, SMITH posted by Gene Johnston on Monday, June 26, 2000

I am looking for a Joseph Johnston, born in Pa. in 1824, who married Rachel Smith, born in Pa. in 1834. I believe her parents were George Smith and Elizabeth Overturf from around Driftwood in Cameron County. Rachel would have been the oldest in a family of 8. They came to Wisconsin between 1868 and 1871. Their children were Joseph, born in 1854; John, born in 1857; Jane, born 1858; Josie, born 1860; Mary , born 1862; Elizabeth, born 1865 and Jeramiah born in 1868. All of these children were born in Pa., presumably around Driftwood. I know some of the family married into the Jordans, the Dents, and the Barrs. Rachel's youngest brother, George Alonzo, lived with the family in Wisconsin until at least 1880. I believe that Joseph came from Columbia Co. and that the family was in Philadelphia before the war. When they came to Wisconsin, they came along with some of Rachel's family, the Smiths, of which some of them were here before they arrived. They settled in Dunn Co. ! in Wisconsin. Does anyone have any idea what nationality the Smiths were? Many thanks. Gene
