Francis Furlong
FRANCIS FURLONG, is a highly respected citizen of Mahoning township, Armstrong county, where he has resided for forty years, and he has lived on his present farm since 1890. He is a native of this county, born May 22, 1845, in Red Bank township, son of John and Susanna (Abel) Furlong, and is of Irish and German descent. His parents were born in Philadelphia. They settled in Red Bank township prior to 1830, and purchasing a farm of 133 acres cleared and improved the greater part of it. John Furlong died there Jan. 6, 1871, at the age of seventy-four years. He and his wife had a family of seven children: Rueban, who is deceased; James, deceased; Edward; William, deceased; John; Emeline E., wife of Isaac Brocious, and Francis.Francis Furlong was reared on the paternal farm in Red Bank township, where he lived until 1872. He had the common school advantages afforded in the neighborhood, and was trained to farm work from boyhood, also following teaming. In 1872 he came to Mahoning township, where in 1890 he purchased and moved to the place he has since occupied, having a tract of 129 acres which is a credit to its owner and to the district in which it is situated. He is recognized by his neighbors and fellow citizens generally as a trustworthy man, and has been called upon to fill various local officies, having served several terms as school director and done his duties faithfully in other positions of trust in the township. He is a Democrat in politics, is a member of the Patrons of Husbandry in Madison township, and is an esteemed member of the Baptist Church at Oakland, which he has served as trustee for several years.
Mr. Furlong was married March 18, 1869, to Margaret Cathcart, daughter of Samuel and Anna (Reed) Cathcart, of Mahoning township, and granddaughter of Robert Cathcart, who settled in what is now Mahoning township in 1805, being probably the first settler there. Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Furlong: Ross, who married Clara Pence; Charlie E., who married Onie Willison; Elsie, married to Clarence Shumaker; Boyd, married to Sadie Sharrar, and Gertude, married to C.F. Willison.
